I wish people knew…
I wish people knew that I want them to ask me about life with diabetes, but I am scared that I will scare them. I wish people knew that sweeping generalizations about life with diabetes is harmful to finding a cure. I wish people knew that managing diabetes is possible without the gadgets, but the gadgets make it a bit easier. I wish people knew that the psychosocial affect of diabetes is far more serious than a low or high blood sugar. I wish people knew that the intricacies in what affects my blood sugar both run my life and mean absolutely nothing to me at the exact same time. I wish people knew that my insulin pump is not an external pancreas. I wish people knew that I don’t think diabetes is the worst thing to happen to me, or any child. I wish people knew that diabetes can take hold for awhile, but with enough love and support from friends and family it will let its grip go. I wish people knew that when I share about my life with diabetes online, I am terrified every time that my friends and family are judging me-deep down, because it sometimes consumes my life. I wish people knew that working for a diabetes organization is the hardest job I have ever had, but I will continue to do it out of passion for a better life.
I wish people knew how much work my life is every day…
But
I am glad they don’t.
